OSHA Long Term Care Worker Protection Train the Trainer Program Part 7: Evaluation Tools/Post-Test

Objectives Identify the importance of evaluation in all training sessions. Discuss a variety of strategies for evaluating learning.

Importance of Evaluation What is the value of taking time to get participant evaluation of any training session? Gain an understanding of the participant’s perspective: * were they satisfied with the training? * did they meet the learning objectives? * the speaker/trainer? * how will they use the information? * program logistics?

Evaluation Can Help Provides trainers with good ideas for ways to improve the session. A perspective of how useful/pertinent participants thought the information was to their work. Validates teaching strategies. Tells us what else may need to be reinforces or reviewed.

Many Mechanisms for Evaluation During a session: * Simple questions inserted into a presentation/session. * Show a picture and ask participants to analyze – is it being done the right way or the wrong way, what would they change? * Share a particular case scenario and ask participants what they would do.

Evaluation Mechanisms After a training session: * written evaluation – simple, easy, with space for “comments”. * Ask open-ended questions at the end so that participants can share “application” of their knowledge on the subject. * Use a post-test.

Examples Post-Test for the LTCWPP. Post-Test for the Train the Trainer program!

Post-Tests Not a college entrance exam! Keep the questions easy to read, multiple choice if possible. Keep them short. Can distribute, give participants a few minutes to complete, and do the answers as a group. This is a learning tool, as well as an evaluation tool.

Post-Test Scores If you decide to use one after a session, you can decide if you want to record the scores. The best outcome is everyone understands the correct answers!

Questions? Suggestions or Comments?
