October 17, 2002University Services to Corporations - Joint Advisory Boards Meetings 2 Diversity needed within Technological Workforce  Technology-based workplace requires highly-skilled workers, particularly in engineering, science & math  Majority demographics shifting from male & Caucasian to female & African American, Asian & Hispanic  Little growth in minority participation in these technical fields  9% engineering jobs held by women, yet 45% of workforce  Full participation of women & minorities in engineering once a moral goal, now critical for U.S. economic security  Intellectual capital of under-represented groups untapped by field  Diverse technological workforce could revitalize corporations with new perspectives on old problems & new interpersonal / teamwork approaches
