04013 Micro Turbine Senior Design OVERVIEW

04013 Micro Turbine Senior Design Purpose Micro Air Vehicle  Surveillance purpose  Approx. 90 grams. Use of batteries for electrical power. Search for lighter power source.

04013 Micro Turbine Senior Design Background Micro Turbine Project Overall Scope  Replace Batteries  Mount onto MAV Last year’s design – Proof of concept was successful  18 watts of power  100 grams

04013 Micro Turbine Senior Design Design Objectives

04013 Micro Turbine Senior Design Design Objectives Produce 5 watts of electrical power Weight reduced to under 40 grams Ease of assembly and disassembly Design team’s own turbine Automate testing

04013 Micro Turbine Senior Design Objectives Achieved Produced 5.5 watts  80 ohms resistance and 95 psig Max power output 14.7 watts  100 ohms resistance and 90 psig Mass of housing 36 grams Housing was reassembled/retested Designed turbine was fabricated Automation of testing through Labview

04013 Micro Turbine Senior Design Future Recommendations

04013 Micro Turbine Senior Design Future Recommendations Design to run off of compressed air cartridges Obtain RPM of generator Rigid coupling Machinability of materials (less burrs) Generator designed specifically for this purpose

04013 Micro Turbine Senior Design Closing Remarks

04013 Micro Turbine Senior Design Schedule

04013 Micro Turbine Senior Design Budget

04013 Thank You QUESTIONS?

04013 Micro Turbine Senior Design Difficulties Encountered

04013 Micro Turbine Senior Design Budget Assumed budget was $2,000.00, actual budget granted $1, $ left to purchase a flow sensor ranging from $ ~ $ No extra funding left over for emergency usage. Talked to RIT to increase funding. Increased to $ with $ as contingency.

04013 Micro Turbine Senior Design Housing Pre-Fabrication Timing during Spring Break  Contacted vendors prior to spring break  Files did not work properly  Had to work through difficulties away from school during spring break Promising Vendors did not come through  Tight tolerances hard to achieve  Not used to fabricating nylon CIMS at RIT fabricated housing

04013 Micro Turbine Senior Design Housing Post-Fabrication Main Housing  Lots of burrs located in hard to reach places  Clean up burrs without affecting tolerances Cap for housing  Could not fit at first  Designed lip was in the way of turbine  Leaks around the cap

04013 Micro Turbine Senior Design Motor Issues 3 Phase Motor  Little knowledge concerning 3 phase motor  Acts like a AC motor  Labview not reading the output Delta Connection  To induce a load on motor  Allowed Labview to pick up voltage output

04013 Micro Turbine Senior Design Labview Learning Labview Using right connections  SCXI 1102: Registers lower voltage  SCXI 1104: Registers higher voltage source Chassis burned out  Approval to switch chassis  Trouble shoot with NI tech support
