ELECTRONIC CAMSHAFT TEAM Senior Design Project 2006 Group Members: Scott Beauchemin Adam Hingorany Alex Abdou Colin McCormack Group Advisors: Professor Douglas Looze, E.E. Professor Robert Hyers, M.E.

ELECTRONIC CAMSHAFT TEAM Senior Design Project 2006 Background & Motivation What is a Camshaft? The camshaft uses lobes to open valves as it rotates; springs are utilized to return the valves to the closed position. Ultimately, the camshaft controls the timing for intake and exhaust of each piston.

ELECTRONIC CAMSHAFT TEAM Senior Design Project 2006 Background & Motivation Timing of a Camshaft

ELECTRONIC CAMSHAFT TEAM Senior Design Project 2006 Background & Motivation Possible Improvements Maximize air intake and exhaust flow per stroke with better accuracy of valve actuation. Boost fuel efficiency over a large RPM range. Increase horsepower over a large RPM range. Increase the marketability of combustion engines.

ELECTRONIC CAMSHAFT TEAM Senior Design Project 2006 Deliverables A comprehensive analysis of both mechanical and electrical camshaft profiles. Design an algorithm to convert frequency to actuation timing for two valves. Develop a system to measure valve position on prototype. Propose development procedures for implementation on working motor. Functional prototype. Deliverables

ELECTRONIC CAMSHAFT TEAM Senior Design Project 2006 The Preliminary Electronic Camshaft System Concept Deliverables

ELECTRONIC CAMSHAFT TEAM Senior Design Project 2006 Design Alternative Implemented Modifications Due to time constraint, the prototype will not be mounted on an actual motor. Implementation will be limited to one valve and then replicated for the second. Timing profile for valve actuation may not be duplicated because of functionality of solenoids.

ELECTRONIC CAMSHAFT TEAM Senior Design Project 2006 Design Alternative Possible Alternatives Develop a resistive system to better replicate mechanical timing profile. Tune timing algorithm for optimal horsepower and fuel efficiency. Create a less obtrusive method for positional surveillance. Pursuit of electromagnetic sensor.

ELECTRONIC CAMSHAFT TEAM Senior Design Project 2006 Proposed MDR Specifications Comprehensive timing analysis of mechanical camshaft system. Established timing algorithm for electrical system. Positional surveillance system near completion. Mechanically functional prototype. MDR Deliverables

ELECTRONIC CAMSHAFT TEAM Senior Design Project 2006 COMMENTS & QUESTIONS?
