4 Scanning Many people think they need to read a text from beginning to end to find relevant information, e.g. for assignments. However this is generally unnecessary and often a waste of time. Developing effective reading strategies helps you locate specific information in a text without having to 'read' it.

5 Scanning These strategies allow you to find topics that you may need to read more intensively. The skill is to read with more focus. These efficient reading skills are necessary for locating which areas of the text you need to read intensively.

6 Scanning Here are four different kinds of reading. Skimming - running the eyes over quickly, to get the gist Scanning - looking for a particular piece of information Extensive reading - longer texts for pleasure and needing global understanding Intensive reading - shorter texts, extracting specific information, accurate reading for detail.

7 Scanning Definition: Scanning is a reading skill used to locate key or specific information quickly, e.g. dates, numbers, examples & definitions. Why scan? To pick up on detail To fill in gaps in your knowledge (give depth)

8 Scanning Steps for scanning Look for key words, or words that are repeated Look for definitions Look for highlighted words, e.g. words in bold or italic Look for numbers, e.g. dates and statistics Look for examples, including diagrams
