Progress on the Coupling Coil & Focus Coil Interface Engineering AFC Module Phone Conference February 13, 2004 Steve Virostek Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

Vacuum Vessel Flexible Joint Concept Helicoflex metal seal is available commercially Gap between flexible flanges is larger than seal cross section to prevent scraping of surfaces during installation Flexible flanges will accommodate misalignment between vessels over all 6 degrees of freedom, thus allowing looser tolerances Magnetic forces cannot be transmitted through this joint Highlights * UHV Tunable Windows, or grids Module Interface Steve Virostek - LBNL

Vacuum Vessel Force Transmission Highlights * UHV Tunable Windows, or grids Separate load carrying members are required to transmit forces between adjacent vacuum vessels Supports at 4 locations around circumference (45º, 135º, 225º & 315º) Location are to be in line with coupling coil support gussets Supports could be solid bars or struts with zero-backlash rod ends Module Interface Steve Virostek - LBNL

Installation & Alignment Procedure The following is a proposed procedure for installing an AFC module as it pertains to the flange seal and support bars: Slide the absorber module between 2 RF modules using a track type mechanism to guide it into place Align the focusing coils to the coupling coils as required Insert the seal and support ring in the gap between the thin flanges (current layout: 12.7 mm gap, 9.5 mm seal) Install clamp rings, spacer bars and bolts to close joint Install support bars across joints to transmit magnetic forces between vacuum vessels Highlights * UHV Tunable Windows, or grids Module Interface Steve Virostek - LBNL
