June 3 Entry Task Have your planner, notebook, a writing utensil, and homework (draft of three body paragraphs) and your persuasive map/prewriting on your desk when the bell rings. I am coming around to collect persuasion maps/outlines and drafts.

Homework Write a rough draft of your introduction. Use one of the strategies we talked about in class. Label it. Due Tuesday, June 7

Grades 10 points each: The outline you made about a longer school day working backward from an essay Your outline Your draft Your revision Worth 100 points: Your persuasive essay, due June 17 at the start of class.

Order of Importance Ordering arguments from least to most important (or visa versa) to persuade an audience

Order of Importance

What do you think… Hi! My name is Joe. I think year round schooling is bad. This is because it is costly, it disrupts learning with frequent breaks, and it has no positive effects on education. Positives: Technically correct, we know who is writing, there is a clear position statement, Negatives: “Hi! My name is Joe!” Pretty boring.

Questioning The writer asks thought-provoking questions to capture the reader’s interest. Interesting fact or statistic The writer gives an interesting piece of information to grab the reader’s attention.

Introductions – Your Turn With your shoulder buddy, look at your assigned introduction. Discuss the characteristics of the introduction Write them down in your notebook: What is the position statement? Is it clearly stated or implied? What persuasive strategy did the author use? Could the intro grab the readers’ attention? In 3 minutes, at 9:46, I will pull sticks to hear what characteristics you identified.

Writing Workshop Time Outline (persuasive map) Draft (body paragraphs) HW for Tuesday (intro) Expectations: You need to be writing, quiet, but don’t need to be silent. Not unnecessarily out of seat.
