M. Bonesini PID Meeting1 M. Bonesini INFN Milano MICE TOF0 construction & planning

M. Bonesini PID Meeting2 Outline  Present design for TOF0 (as endorsed by MICE TP)  Current problems  BTF testbeam plans  some side considerations for TOF1/2

M. Bonesini PID Meeting3 Rates (Singles per ms) target insertion reduced to get 600 good mu+/sec (AUG05) LAHETGeant4MARSAverage TOF TOF Tracker Tracker TOF Good μ + (Ev/sec)

M. Bonesini PID Meeting4 TOF0 AUG05 beamline:news from 21/10/05 from T. Roberts 6pi beam

M. Bonesini PID Meeting5 1pi beamline design from D. Adams

M. Bonesini PID Meeting6 Present design of TOF0 From D. Adams & T. Roberts simulations a 40 x 40 cm 2 active area and a 4 cm segmentation seems a good choice BC-420 scintillator bars 40 x 4 x 2.5 cm 3 ordered at Bicron (emission peak ~390 nm) some problems with plexiglas procurement for lightguides (it must be UVT, not commercial one)

M. Bonesini PID Meeting7 Current problems small problems with UVT plexiglas procurement main problem mainly connected with FE electronics use of V1290 TDCs may require some integration stage after amplification to implement TOT correction one V1290 has been delivered to INFN Milano, we are waiting for V2718 DAQ

M. Bonesini PID Meeting8 The BTF testbeam we need to test FINAL detector “prototypes” (we are tight with time schedule) : TOF0 is frozen … we need to freeze also MUCAL, i.e. CKV2 in/out defines MUCAL dimensions !!!! Testbeam 10+2 days requested for beginning of June We will try to have our DAQ (not use default BTF one, that is quite cumbersome)

M. Bonesini PID Meeting9 Some side considerations for TOF1/TOF2 up to know only PMTs fine-mesh solution considered but problems: their cost has increased as respect to previous quotations by 50% !!!! (increase of cost of fine-mesh grids, according to Hamamatsu) B field is 1000 G _|_ to PMT axis (it can be shielded also in R4998) and 200 G // to PMT axis : studies are ingoing to see if we can either increase shielding for // axis component and have R4998 working

M. Bonesini PID Meeting10 Calculations from J. Cobb, presently B// ~200G, B_|_1000G |B| at TOF for 7 configurations of Iron Discs & Gap

M. Bonesini PID Meeting11 Conclusions up to now we are in schedule but manpower is very thin and we have to avoid ANY duplication/waste of work: eg prototyping must be final detector construction
