4-H Afterschool The NEED Project & The Department of Energy Present…

Light and Lighting: Science Camp 2004

Science Camp begins with the 4-H Pledge

Using Thermometers Light is radiant energy that travels in waves We can measure heat with a thermometer

Light Can Be Absorbed And Transformed into Heat Light waves can be reflected, refracted, and absorbed by substances When light is absorbed by substances, it is often transformed into thermal energy (heat)

Solar Balloon And Radiometer When substances absorb light and turn it into heat, they usually expand

Solar Balloon

Light And Chemical Changes Chemical reactions can produce light Heat can speed chemical reactions; cold can slow them down

Solar Beads Light can produce chemical changes in substances

Glow Toys Some substances can store light and release it as light at a later time

Light Can Be Separated Visible light is made of many wavelengths of radiant energy Visible light can be separated into different colors of light according to its wavelength

Light Can Be Reflected Light travels in a straight line The angle of incidence of light is equal to the angle of reflection Light waves can be reflected

Light Can Be Turned Into Electricity A Photovoltaic Cell can convert light into electricity Electricity can be used to perform work

It Takes Energy To Make Light Some lightbulbs produce more heat than others Some lightbulbs are more energy efficient than others

It Takes Energy to Make Light Life cycle cost is the total cost of using an appliance and is a more important measure than purchase price
