IEEE Wireless 2002 Conference - Seattle2/25/02 Overview of Presentation Overview of Bluetooth protocol stack architecture and how it is partitioned today Typical system architecture today Product development areas Interfaces available Bluetooth qualification process overview

IEEE Wireless 2002 Conference - Seattle2/25/02 About Stonestreet One Established in 1996 in Louisville, KY, US. Offer Engineering Design Services, Bluetooth Protocol Stack, and Bluetooth Developer Kits. More info can be found at

IEEE Wireless 2002 Conference - Seattle2/25/02 Overview of Bluetooth Stack Applications and Profiles Upper Layers of Stack Lower Layers of Stack

IEEE Wireless 2002 Conference - Seattle2/25/02 Overview of Bluetooth Stack Lower layers of Bluetooth stack

IEEE Wireless 2002 Conference - Seattle2/25/02 Overview of Bluetooth Stack Lower layers of Bluetooth stack Radio – Transceiver operating in 2.4GHz ISM band Baseband - Bluetooth link controller which carries out the baseband protocols and other low-level link routines. Link Manger – Used for link set-up and control. The signals are interpreted and filtered out by the Link Manager on the receiving side and are not propagated to higher layers. Lower HCI – Host Controller Interface, well defined API to control the Bluetooth module Physical HCI Transport – UART, RS232, USB

IEEE Wireless 2002 Conference - Seattle2/25/02 Overview of Bluetooth Stack Upper layers of Bluetooth stack

IEEE Wireless 2002 Conference - Seattle2/25/02 Overview of Bluetooth Stack Upper layers of Bluetooth stack Upper HCI - Host Controller Interface, well defined API to control the Bluetooth module L2CAP - Supports higher level protocol multiplexing, packet segmentation and reassembly, and the conveying of quality of service information. RFCOMM – Serial port emulation protocol SDP – Protocol for locating services provided by or available through a Bluetooth device. SCO Manager and Bluetooth Stack Controller are not part of the specification, but generally are components of an upper layer Bluetooth protocol stack.

IEEE Wireless 2002 Conference - Seattle2/25/02 Overview of Bluetooth Stack

IEEE Wireless 2002 Conference - Seattle2/25/02 Typical System Architecture Today Lower layers of the stack reside in the Bluetooth hardware (baseband processor and radio) from a silicon or module manufacturer such as TI, Ericsson, Philips, CSR, Taiyo Yuden, Silicon Wave, etc. Application, profiles, and upper layers of the stack reside on a separate host processor and communication between upper and lower layers of the stack occurs over the HCI interface.

IEEE Wireless 2002 Conference - Seattle2/25/02 Product Development Areas Radio Radio and/or Baseband Processor Upper Layer Protocol Stack and Profiles Application Development

IEEE Wireless 2002 Conference - Seattle2/25/02 Interfaces Available Radio – no standard interface defined, company specific Radio and/or Baseband Processor – interface between radio and baseband is company specific, but between baseband and upper layer stack, there is the well defined standard HCI interface as part of the Bluetooth spec Upper Layer Stack and Profiles – no standard interface to the application developer, each vendors API into the stack is different Application Development – vendor specific also

IEEE Wireless 2002 Conference - Seattle2/25/02 Bluetooth Qualification Overview Current Mostly accomplished by manufacturer providing engineering evidence that test case has been successfully completed Not many units available for interoperability profile testing Lots of questions remain as to what are the minimum requirements for qualification

IEEE Wireless 2002 Conference - Seattle2/25/02 Bluetooth Qualification Overview Future Qualification performed by a third party Bluetooth Qualification Test Facility (BQTF) As time goes on, many units will be available for interoperability profile testing Fewer unanswered questions about qualification as more Bluetooth products come to market.

IEEE Wireless 2002 Conference - Seattle2/25/02 Summary There are several different areas relating to Bluetooth that one could be involved in It’s not too late! Don’t forget about or minimize the qualification aspect of a Bluetooth product Questions??
