Presentation transcript:

The Boat The hull of the boat is 1/4 of an inch thick, and made of fiber glass. Boats come in eights, fours, doubles, and singles. This pertains to the number of rowers. A new boat costs between $20,000-$30,000 There are two types of rowing, sweeping (one oar), and skulling (two oars) Key components of the boat: seat and slide, rigger, oar lock, oar, foot rest, coxswain, bow ball

Layout of a boat!

Seat and Slide Hollow rails that the seat rolls on The seat is mounted on wheels which attach to the slide, allowing the rower to roll up and down the slide Seat (top view) Seat (bottom view)

Rigger Holds oarlock, is attached to the side of the boat. Oar Lock Attaches the oar to the boat, helps transfer the force from the rower onto the oar, propelling the boat through the water.

Made of synthetic fiber, usually carbon fiber ft. long! Placed in an oarlock, and used to propel the boat through the water. Each oar costs hundreds of dollars!

Bow Ball Small rubber like ball at the bow of the boat. It is typically 4cm in diameter and has two primary functions. The first being if you run into something it helps prevent the boat from splintering. The bow ball is also used to tell a position of a boat in a race.

The Most Important! A small feisty person who is the eyes for the boat. They steer the boat, avoid objects and other boats, and when the rowers start getting tired motivates us to keep on rowing!
