Organization Office Staff: Executive Director; 2 half-time and 1 full time Director; admin assistant; analyst; accountant; student assistant BOD: President’s Commission Advisory bodies –Strategic Planning Council (release time; grant reviews) –Faculty Consensus Group (dissemination; grant reviews) California State University Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology

Activities Grants Program –Programmatic –Joint venture –Faculty student collaborative seed –Faculty and student travel Annual Biotechnology Symposium Awards program Core Facilities Other activities (CIRM, regional facilities, Ag biotech, PSMs) California State University Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology

Funding Three sources for funding currently –Legislative earmark ($10 6 ) began in 1999 –Tithe ($400K) –Chancellor ($45) –Total funding each year: $1,445,000 Federal dollars (regional training facilities) As expenses go up, $$ available for grants goes down! California State University Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology

CHALLENGES Get more money! –Fund more grants –Keep Core Facilities supported and functional –Fund new types of grants and initiatives –Graduate student scholarships –Expand the symposium –Support the regional facilities Get more staff California State University Program for Education and Research in Biotechnology
