Geoff Pile LCLS Fixed support IDR 12 th January 2006 LCLS Fixed Support IDR Introduction and History Are special fixed supports needed? Initial ideas for “undulator cells” Granite and the cradle/girder interface. Transfer scope to ANL Alternative ideas SUT and Production of fixed supports

Geoff Pile LCLS Fixed support IDR 12 th January 2006 Are special fixed supports needed? Successful SASE FEL operation depends on extremely precise location of the components in the undulator system. Historical measurements of slow ground motion at the SLAC site, atmospheric pressure and thermal effects show that re-alignments of the undulators could be required more often than once a month. It was expected that a motorized mover system would take up small weekly or monthly realignments but the fixed support would have to take up large initial construction settlement and subsequently longer term settlement throughout the life of the project. Complete system stability and alignment is therefore critical. A special two tier system of fixed and motorized supports will be required.

Geoff Pile LCLS Fixed support IDR 12 th January 2006 Initial ideas for “undulator cells” The technical hardware in the Undulator Tunnel is comprised of 33 Undulators and associated equipment. Each undulator is separated and followed by a diagnostic break section. There are two types of diagnostic break. Very simple: Short breaks and Long breaks. A cell is made up of three undulators - two with short breaks and the third undulator has a long break 33 undulators would mean 11 sequential cells of 3 undulators

Geoff Pile LCLS Fixed support IDR 12 th January 2006 SLAC Granite and the ANL cradle/girder interface. Slac initially proposed eleven granite, fixed support bases ANL to supply one complete undulator cell for each base. This type of base could be made extremely flat, stable and would be the interface to ANL’s support mover system Great idea – ANL would only have to supply a motorized “Cradle” to support and adjust each undulator.

Geoff Pile LCLS Fixed support IDR 12 th January 2006

Geoff Pile LCLS Fixed support IDR 12 th January 2006 Transfer scope to ANL In the Spring of 05, design responsibility for the fixed supports was transferred to ANL. This made sense. SLAC would look after conventional facilities and ANL would design from the floor upwards. The whole design for undulator stability and adjustment would be the responsibility of one group.

Geoff Pile LCLS Fixed support IDR 12 th January 2006 Alternative initial ideas - Multiple supports per undulator Large amount of design collaboration ( SS with ET & SLAC). Cradle became a girder

Geoff Pile LCLS Fixed support IDR 12 th January 2006 The Single Undulator Test and Production versions of Fixed Supports New prototype designs on order Some legacy parts left over for SUT Post SUT - System Optimization for Production (Re-look at connecting plate, girder etc.)

Geoff Pile LCLS Fixed support IDR 12 th January 2006 Two supports per Undulator

Geoff Pile LCLS Fixed support IDR 12 th January 2006 Cost & Schedule Budget is approximately $12k undulator 2 supports / undulator = $6k / support P3 says - IDR (12/6/05) SUT - Prep next month FDR - 4/24/06 Procurement - 6/15/ units Installation - 08/07 ~ April/July 07
