Strategies for the Lean Years Ruth Farrell, Associate VP for Research Administration

Pursue funding opportunities others in your discipline mention as funding sources in their publications – looking for private support and non-traditional sources.

Look for funding related to the application of your science: If you are a microbiologist think –Pest control –Dairy/food safety –Ground water remediation –Science literacy

Look for funding related to the application of your science: If you are a computer scientist –The sky’s the limit

Pursue interdisciplinary opportunities with colleagues in other fields attacking similar problems.

Think more in terms of how your ideas might be applicable to the expressed mission of non-federal sponsors.

The Pan American Health and Education Foundation seeks to advance knowledge of and good practices in the areas in infection control and the health of indigenous peoples. We wish to support new approaches that accurately address these needs and organizations that share our vision for enhancing health care in the Americas.

Think more in terms of how your ideas might be applicable to the expressed needs of industry partners –SBIR among others

Can you follow the money? Think about how federal agencies are targeting their grants –Homeland Security –NIH Roadmap

Homeland Security (HSARPA) Bioinformatics and Assay Development solicitation, BIAD2 (BAA 06-01) ( –Develop and validate actionable assays for the public and private sector –Develop and validate new assays and novel assay methodologies to enhance existing detection systems and enable future detection platforms –Develop next generation assays which are robust against novel, emerging and engineered threats –Develop novel assays that detect low levels of ribonucleic acid (RNA)- based viral threats in complex backgrounds –Develop novel assays to characterize the viability, degree of virulence or toxicity, and countermeasure resistance of a biological agent –Develop new bioinformatics tools to support assay development and assay validation

NIH Roadmap ( –New Pathways to Discovery –Building Blocks, Biological Pathways, and Networks –Molecular Libraries and Imaging –Structural Biology –Bioinformatics and Computational Biology –Nanomedicine –Research Teams of the Future –High-Risk Research –Interdisciplinary Research –Public-Private Partnerships –Re-engineering the Clinical Research Enterprise –Re-engineering the Clinical Research Enterprise Initiatives
