4 Roadmap Planning at UNC September, 2003: Dr. Zerhouni announces the Roadmap January, 2004: 12-member Carolina Roadmap Task Force is convened March, 2004: Task Force report recommends: –Create a campus-wide organization for Roadmap projects –Demonstrate administrative support –Appoint a Roadmap chair –Provide staff and resources

5 UNC’s Response NIH Roadmap Executive Committee Chair: Rudy Juliano, Professor of Pharmacology Executive Committee members: –Kim Brouwer, Chair Pharmacotherapy, Pharmacy –Barbara Entwisle, Director, Carolina Population Center and Professor of Sociology –Michael Fried, Professor of Medicine and Director, Hepatology Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology –Daniel Reed, Vice Chancellor for Information Technology and Director, Institute for Renaissance Computing –Rich Superfine, Professor of Physics –David Savitz, Chair of Epidemiology

6 Campus Support Roadmap Committee will steer efforts to –Build research teams and partnerships at UNC –Liaise with NIH on Roadmap –Highlight interdisciplinary research (‘workshops’) –Facilitate development of proposals –A new staff position (Karen Stone) Seed funding from VC for proposal development Additional support from –Offices within Research and Economic Development –College of Arts and Sciences –Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health Freeze-dried, rehydrated platelets in a canine carotid artery.
