Sand Mystery Module

Imagine you are a detective!

Here is the story: One sunny day, Ms. Esmeralda Diamond decided to go to the beach near her vacation home in Hawaii. She put her swimsuit on, packed her lunch, put her towel and sunscreen in the car and headed out. She also brought her purse with the family jewels in it because she never went anywhere without it! It was a beautiful day for laying out in the sun.

But…. While tanning herself on the beach, Diamond dozed off. When she awoke she found that her purse that had been right next to her was missing! After searching high and low for it she decided she needed to bring in some reinforcements. After the police were called they found four suspects and an empty purse.

Can you, the private detective, help solve the case? The only evidence the police could find was some sand from the inside of Ms. Diamond’s purse. The police have found four suspects: Mr. John Smith, Mr. No Body, Ms. Molly Holly and Mr. Steve Snow. You will be provided with more clues as we go along in the mystery.

Clue #1 Here is a sample of sand from Hookena Beach in Hawaii near Ms. Diamond’s vacation home. Examine it for size, shape, color, and degree of sorting. Draw a picture of it. Magnified 10x

Clue #2 This is a sample of sand taken from the shoes of Mr. John Smith. Examine it for size, shape, color, and degree of sorting. Draw a picture of it. Magnified 10x

Clue #6 Mr. John Smith owns a successful company in New Caledonia. He was a friend and a business partner of Ms. Diamond’s recently deceased husband. He insists he was nowhere near the beach where Ms. Diamond was tanning. Sample of sand from Mr. Smith’s shoes.

Clue #7 Mr. No Body owns a scuba diving shop on Papakolee beach in Hawaii. He is a distant cousin of Ms. Diamond. He insists he was nowhere near the beach when the victim was found. Sample of sand found on Mr. Body’s shoes.

Clue #8 Ms. Molly Holly owns a resort in Fiji. She and Ms. Diamond were travel partners. She insists she was nowhere near the beach where Ms. Diamond lost her purse. Sample of sand from Ms. Holly’s shoes.

Clue #9 Mr. Steve Snow is a retired millionaire living in a condominium in Carbonares, Spain. He and Ms. Diamond dated in college. He insists he was nowhere near the beach where Ms. Diamond’s purse went missing. Sample of sand from Mr. Snow’s shoes.

Who do you think is the criminal? Mr. John Smith? Mr. No Body? Ms. Molly Holly? Mr. Steve Snow?

Here is your final clue: This is a sample of the sand found in the purse of Ms. Diamond. Examine it for size, shape, color, and degree of sorting. Draw a picture of it. Magnified 10x
