Coaching Skills & Effective Communication

Five frogs are sitting on a log. Four decide to jump off. How many are left?frogslog

The answer is five ! There is a huge difference between deciding and DOING.

What do YOU understand By COACHING?

Scenario A Gary: How did you think that meeting went? Chris: It was Okay – I suppose Gary: you don’t seem to sure Chris: I think that I could have handled it better Gary: In what way? Chris: Well maybe if I had been a little firmer with people Gary: What could you have done? Scenario B Mel: I can’t seem to get through to Marina Zak: If I were you I’d go to lunch with her and sort it out Mel: I’ve tried that but it doesn’t work Zak: How about confronting her then? Mel: That doesn’t work either Zak: Perhaps you should change jobs? Mel: Hmmm….

 Listen and observe well. Note how someone learns best and what their strengths are.  Empower (once you have assessed that the person has the skills required to do the task and has the necessary commitment).  Always make clear what the parameters are when empowering (i.e. time, budget and other resources).  Use errors as learning opportunities.  Help your people learn to solve problems themselves rather than doing it for them Adopt a Coaching Style

Explore Options Together

Creating A Positive Environment

Putting it all-together A colleague has consistently filed documents incorrectly, leading to lengthy delays and poor customer service. Make your colleague aware of the situation. Monitor your use of body language, and make your comments as positive and supportive as possible. At the conclusion of the session, the coach should ask the colleague for feedback.
