Information Literacy Defined Association of College and Research Libraries focuses on "the set of skills needed to find, retrieve, analyze, and use information"

Information Literacy Defined Shapiro and Hughes (1996) argue for a broader definition that ranges from "knowing how to use computers and access information to critical reflection on the nature of information itself, its technical infrastructure, and its social, cultural and even philosophical context and impact."

Questions we considered What are the information literacy practices we want to support and develop in our students, staff, and faculty? What are the ideal elements of a program for developing information literacy practices? What is being done now at CSU to support the development of information literacy practices? What is being done elsewhere to support the development of information literacy practices? What isn’t being done (that should be)? What activities should TILT support with other university units to develop information literacy? Which units? What would be the best way to form efforts to support the development of information literacy competencies into a coherent, integrated program?

What are the information literacy practices we want to support and develop in our students, staff, and faculty? Understanding Current Information Landscape Work with new Information Technologies to both seek and produce information Adaptability Collaboration & Building a personal learning network Searching, navigating, filtering, evaluating, documenting, and managing and organizing large amounts of information

What are the ideal elements of a program for developing information literacy practices? …a well-funded program that provides resources for both staff/faculty development and training, as well as staff positions dedicated to researching cutting- edge technologies and disseminating the information.

What are the ideal elements of a program for developing information literacy practices? Content experts, role models, peer mentors, and help resources would be readily available to students and faculty.

What are the ideal elements of a program for developing information literacy practices? Centralized workspaces and access to tools that support production and collaboration among students, staff and faculty are key factors of a successful program.

What are the ideal elements of a program for developing information literacy practices? Cross-university, collaborative, team-taught classes that employ a variety of technologies

What are the ideal elements of a program for developing information literacy practices? Incorporation of information literacy concepts into existing coursework, where possible, to enhance relevance to students

What are the ideal elements of a program for developing information literacy practices? Increasingly sophisticated IL concepts incorporated into classes as students progress through their majors

University-wide focus on individual aspects of information literacy on a regular (monthly?) basis forming a foundation for discussion and innovation across campus Students and faculty showcase their work through ePortfolios and the digital repository
