Structured Comparison Qns This section requires you to answer a three part question comparing two similar artworks. (One question will usually be asking about two paintings, while the other is usually non-traditional artworks like photography/new-media artwork/sculptor etc)

Breaking down each question: a)Asking you to describe both artworks and the materials used in the artworks (in the case of non-painting works like sculptures or installation art). b)Requires you to explain and analyze the areas of similarities and differences between the artworks, using art vocabulary to compare how the artworks have been created and how the artist could have intended for it to affect the audience. c)Wants you to explore the relationship between the two artworks. Usually the artworks used for juxtaposition are from different preceding movements, and often influenced or was influenced by each other.

Sample Qn: a)Describe the subject matter in both artworks. b)Explain and analyze the artists’ use of different mediums in expressing a similar theme. c)What do you think Cindy Sherman is trying to comment on by reproducing Caravaggio’s painting?

Fig.1.1 Caravaggio, “Sick Bacchus” Oil on Canvas: 67 x 53 cm Study the information given to you and look for hints. The character is sickly? Wow! This painting is old! Take note of the size… it’s slightly smaller than human size… probably for hanging as a decoration on a wall. Sounds like a dude, and Italian to the boot! So it’s a traditional painting.

Fig.1.2 Cindy Sherman, “Untitled” (No.224) Colour Photograph: x cm Eh? Why is it untitled? There is a serial number? Does that mean there is more? Hmm… it’s definitely a Female artist. And she sounds American… or British? This looks pretty recent! Oh? It’s a photograph in colour. What could this mean? Hey! This is quite a big artwork!

Fig.1.2 Cindy Sherman, “Untitled” (No.224) Colour Photograph: x cm Things you can talk abt: Male Artist vs Female Artist, Painter vs Photographer, Painting vs Photography, Old vs New, Men vs Women, Original vs Copy, Real vs Fake
