Upskilling to Model-Based Software Development in the Automotive and Embedded Software Sector METHODS AND TOOLS FOR ACTIVE LEARNING WITH WEB 2.0 TECHNOLOGIES Sonja Trapp Fraunhofer IESE IADAT-e2009 – 5th International Conference on Education Bilbao – June 24-26, 2009

embed4auto © by embed4auto project The Embed4Auto project  LEONARDO DA VINCI – European vocational education and training programme  Transfer of innovation projects  „They aim to improve the quality of training systems through the development and transfer of innovative policies, contents, methods and procedures within vocational education and training“.  24 months:  5 European partners:  Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering, Kaiserslautern, Germany  Inter Online, Avilés, Spain  South-East European Research Centre, Thessaloniki, Greece  Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey  Umeå University, Umeå, Sweden

embed4auto © by embed4auto project Goals of the project  The Embed4auto project intends to provide European industry with innovative training and to promote the use of model-based technologies in the area of embedded systems development  Results and training offers from a previous project with partners from France, Ireland, Bulgaria and Romania ( are adapted and extended, then transferred and disseminated - to other industrial sectors (automotive + suppliers) - into new European countries, addressing - new target groups: engineers with different technical backgrounds; individual learnerswww.up2uml.org

embed4auto © by embed4auto project Problem description  System engineers must learn how to create high-level models of reality. In the case of embedded systems, also hardware components, and other disciplines are involved  What kind of capabilities & skills need to be trained?  Abstract thinking  Clearness of expression & statement (for communication with external people)  Collaboration & teamwork (system engineers always work in (distributed) teams and, of course, some  Theoretical knowledge: adult learners with long-time job experience prefer to learn through practical exercise rather than through one-way lecturing  Methods and learning environments leveraged to improve training of system engineers should therefore integrate a maximum of multi-disciplinarity and allow for acquisition of multiple skills

embed4auto © by embed4auto project Pedagogical & technical challenges  Creation of a learning-conducive personalizable learning environment (PLE) allowing  self-organized, active and social learning  interaction of students with the subject in a perceptive, reflective and explorative way  development of soft skills (collaboration, creativity, problem solving, communication, qualified feedback, etc.)  Selection of web 2.0 applications allowing to easily  socialize  communicate  exchange experiences and  work collaboratively – and in this way  improve learning efficiency

embed4auto © by embed4auto project Web 2.0 and Educational Social Software  Social software  is a class of networked tools that support and encourage individuals to learn together while retaining individual control over their time, space, presence, activity, identity and relationship  enables communication between groups where the members are made aware of what other groups are doing, and where each member of the group benefits  allows gathering and sharing resources to inform others and receive feedback

embed4auto © by embed4auto project Future learning environments  Features of the personalizable learning environment (PLE) developed within Embed4Auto:  A course repository with learning material in various formats (subject-matter knowledge base).  An exercise tool (StudentUML) providing application of theoretical knowledge into practice by performing interactive exercises  A sharing tool (PENCIL) for collaborative development of solutions to exercises among peer learners and /or tutors

embed4auto © by embed4auto project PENCIL platform  PENCIL (Platform for Exercise sharing aNd Collaborative and Interactive Learning): a tool that encourages the collaborative development of solutions to exercises in a community of learners and tutors  PENCIL is a sort of interaction and sharing platform allowing learners to  ask questions regarding exercises  suggest solutions, give and receive feedback  share contributions  make multiple avenues to solutions visible  discuss problems  “learn by teaching”  PENCIL paves the way for active learning and collaborative problem solving
