Imager State of the Lab Report / December Issues Facing Imager Research Diversity Students and Funded Research Publishing All of Our Work Faculty Recruiting Graduate Student Recruiting Space Requirements

Imager State of the Lab Report / December Research Diversity How do we manage diversity? –computer graphics graphics –human-computer interaction –computational geometry What does this means for the lab?

Imager State of the Lab Report / December Students and Funded Research Projects provide funding to maintain Imager NSERC individual research grants (all faculty) NSERC strategic grants (two currently) (new) IRIS NCE “transparancy” project (Karon) (new) IRIS NCE Acme project (Wolfgang) (new) Nissan projects (Ron) CFI equipment (Michiel, Karon, and Ron) Research only gets done with students!

Imager State of the Lab Report / December Publishing All of Our Work Publish in a variety of venues –conferences –Journals –ASI Exchange Make sure the lab is well recognized as –a top research group in the field(s) –a good place to work and learn

Imager State of the Lab Report / December Faculty Recruiting Join in departmental recruiting –attend recruiting talks –meet with candidates (lunches and demos) –fill out recruiting forms Discuss candidates within Imager –inform recruiting committee reps

Imager State of the Lab Report / December Graduate Student Recruiting Establish targets for new admissions –how many PhD/MSc students in the lab? –what areas have capacity/need? Cultivate good UBC CS undergrads –TAs can identify good students in courses –NSERC USRA (summer students) Imager open house in February

Imager State of the Lab Report / December Space Requirements Space is about to become scarce –current faculty (Michiel, Brian, Karon?) –new faculty this year and next one hire in graphics and one in HCI? new director for MAGIC? New research requires more lab space experiment room in FSC 2331 digital video editing suite expanding?
