Building Digital Library using DSpace Dr. M.Krishnamurthy, Librarian Indian Statistical Institute 8 th Mile Mysore Road R.V.College Post Bangalore

Introduction  A digital Library is a system consisting of collection of information resources stored in digital form with is associated technical capabilities for creating, searching and accessing information.

Background of ISI Indian Statistical Institute, a unique institution devoted to the research teaching and application of statistics, natural sciences and social science and awards the degree in the field of Statistics, Mathematics, Information Science and Documentation, and economics. The main campus is located in the metropolis of Kolkatta, New Delhi and Bangalore. It is funded by Govt of India. Library Collection Bound Volumes Current Bangalore 50,000 16, Kolkatta 2,50,000 1,00, New Delhi 62,500 19,

Objective  To develop a digital library of mathematics  To create an end user interface for searching the information at the micro level of documents like chapter, sections and paragraphs.  To provide researchers at ISI, opportunities to search, retrieve information in a flexible manner from digital collection.

Why DSpace 1.DSpace is an open source technology platform which can be customized and its capabilities can be extended 2.Dspace is a service model for open access and/or digital a archiving for perceptual access. 3.Dspace is a plat form to build an IR and the collections are searchable and retrievable by the web. 4.To make available institution –based scholarly material in digital formats. The collections will be open and interoperable.

 Metadata Representation Descriptive Metadata Administrative metadata Structural metadata  Metadata formation

 Issues  Lessons

Conclusion  The digital library makes information accessible to the end user, in an easy to use form, over the world wide web. The main reasons to digitize are to enhance access and improve preservation. The intent is to encourage users to search collections rapidly and comprehensively from anywhere at any time. There are some preliminary tasks of deciding on collection, careful evaluation of collection and the digitations of only those items that will provide maximal advantage to end users.
