FIRE SAFETY & PREVENTION

Fire Facts In US over 5,000 people die in fires each year. 80% of all fires occur at home Most fires occur between 8 pm and 8 am Many times, severe injuries or even death are due to SMOKE, not the fire.

Cooking and Fire Never leave cooking food on the stovetop unattended, and keep a close eye on food cooking inside the oven If there is an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed to prevent flames from burning you and your close Three in every 10 reported home fires start in the kitchen—more than any other place in the home

What is Fire? 1. HEAT 2. OXYGEN 3. FUEL Three elements are needed to create a fire: 1. HEAT 2. OXYGEN 3. FUEL

Common Causes Spontaneous Ignition – slow buildup of heat in piles of trash and oily rags. Electrical Equipment – light or breaker switches; light bulbs or wiring overheat; faulty wiring Chemicals – gasoline or alcohol Smoking – carelessness with cigarette butts; playing with matches; smoking in bed, etc. Poor Housekeeping – not using smoke detector; faulty smoke detector; trash storage; dust around electrical equipment, etc.

Emergency Evacuation Procedure R Rescue A Alarm C Contain/Confine/Control E Evacuate/Extinguish

When to Extinguish a Fire All people are evacuated Call 911 Fire small enough to be contained by the available extinguisher Correct extinguisher available Escape route nearby and secure Only extinguish if all 5 conditions are met!!!

Which Extinguisher to Use Class A- Extinguishes ordinary combustibles by cooling the material below its ignition temp and soaking the fibers to prevent re-ignition Class B- Extinguishes flammable liquids, greases or gases by removing the oxygen, preventing the vapors from reaching the ignition source or inhibiting the chemical chain reaction Class C- Extinguishes energized electrical equipment by using an extinguishing agent that is not capable of conducting electrical currents

How to Operate P Pull pin A Aim at the base of the fire S Squeeze handle S Sweep from side to side

Alternative Methods to Control Fires Grease or oil burning in a pan... Burning small appliance… Fire on another person… Fire on yourself… Smother fire with lid Turn off electricity, throw baking soda on fire Roll person on ground Stop, drop and roll on ground

Remember Practice Fire Safety on the Job and at Home
