Describing Properties of Gas

Properties of Gas Properties of gas are different from the other types of matter. Unlike solids and liquids, you cannot describe gas by color, shape, texture, etc.

Lack of Color Most gases are colorless This type of matter is invisible most of the time. Visible gases are normally gray or white

Gases Expand -Gases expand to fill their containers -Similar to liquids, gases expand to fit whichever container they are in -Video: /results?search_query=ba lloon+expanding

Odor (How does it smell?) Some types of gases have an odor Therefore, people can describe some gases by explaining how they smell

Atoms in Gases Atoms are tiny particles of matter. They make up solids, liquids, and gases! Atoms in solids are tightly wound together. When atoms are so close together, it makes it difficult to change its shape. That is why solids do not change shapes. In liquids, atoms are not as close together. Atoms in liquids are located farther apart. Let’s demonstrate this with our hands! In gases, atoms are much more spread out. They roam more freely and therefore cover more space than both solids and liquids. Atoms in gases are loosely packed.
