January 22, 2015 characterization in TSB chapter 13 Hom ework: Finish reading chapters 14,15 and 16 for homework. Finish Cole characterization poster. Have a great long weekend! :) Objective I can evaluate the use of CHARACTERIZATION in TSB Warm Up: Look up the definition for CHARACTERIZATION in the back of your Literature book and copy it into your notes.

characterization th e technique used by an author to reveal and develop a character. basically...how we as readers get to know a character in a story

physical appearance

dialogue, thoughts and actions

other characters' reactions

narrator's direct comments

4 basic methods of characterization physical appearance dialogue - what they say thoughts - what they think actions - what they do other character's reactions or interactions with the main character direct comments from the narrator

You will now read chapter 13 ofTouching Spirit Bear. As you read, you will pull example of text for something Cole says, does, thinks and how he interacts with another character. More importantly, you will then answer... What do each of these things reveal about Cole's character?

Make a chart like this in your notes. Be sure to take up most, if not all, of the page... Dialogue: What this reveals about Cole: Actions: What this reveals about Cole: Thoughts: What this reveals about Cole: Interaction with another character: What this reveals about Cole:

Chapter Cole notices that the baby sparrows tried to do something before their death. What was it? How does Cole relate this to his experience growing up? 2. Cole begins to think about the circle of life. What is this circle, according to Cole, and how does he feel about his role in it? 3. Cole thinks “The power to choose was the real power, not the fake power of making others afraid.” Explain. 4. What does Cole catch to eat at the end of this chapter? Chapter In this chapter, what are some of the things Cole does to survive? 2. Spirit Bear appears near Cole at the end of this chapter. What do you think will happen to Cole? Chapter When Spirit Bear comes back, what does Cole want to do? What does he actually do? What impact does this have on Cole? 2. How does Cole feel about death? 3. What was the buzzing sound Cole heard? 4. What was Cole really experiencing when he thought the seagulls were grabbing at him and trying to lift him up? 5. What do Edwin and Garvey do with Cole?

Characterization of Cole in chapter 13 # 1 - Cole's dialogue # 2 - Cole's actions # 3 - Cole's thoughts # 4 - Another character's interaction with Cole

Now you will create a characterization poster of Cole Your poster must include: A large, colorful illustration of Cole either doing, saying or thinking your answers. Or a picture of another character interacting with Cole) An example of text (including page#) to support your method of characterization A 2-3 sentence explanation of what this thought, action, dialogue reveals about Cole's character. # 1 - Cole's dialogue # 2 - Cole's actions # 3 - Cole's thoughts # 4 - Another character's interaction with Cole

What does Cole...SAY? What does this reveal about Cole? pg "My fault" - in response to Garvey apologizing for sending Cole to the island pg "Whatever happens now, I'm done being mad." - in response to Garvey telling him that he will still have to face a jail sentence. In the past, Cole blamed everyone else for his problems (Peter, his parents, Garvey), but now, he is taking responsibility for his mistakes. In the past, Cole would have gotten angry, but now he is controlling it and not wanting to be controlled by it.

What does Cole...DO? What does this reveal about Cole? pg "Deliberately, he raised his hand and tossed the hair into the water. Beginning today, he would tell the truth." In the past, he would have kept it and bragged about it, but now he is realizing how important it is to be trusted through his words.

What does Cole...THINK? What does this reveal about Cole? pg "But the Spirit Bear was also a memory that would never disappear from his heart." In the past, he would have blamed the bear for everything bad, but now he understands that he was at fault, and also the bear taught him about trust, and good things.

what do other character's say about him? What does this reveal about Cole? pg In the scene when Cole asks Garvey why he helped him. Garvey finally tells Cole that he used to be a lot like Cole, and that the thing he regrets most is that he was never able to help those he hurt. Garvey is trying to teach Cole that he needs to make the most of this chance, and to truly heal, Cole needs to help Peter.

Chapter Questions - Chapter When Rosey asks for a blanket, Garvey wants to hand him the at.óow. Why is it significant that Cole reaches out and grabs it? 2. Garvey tells Cole that he will still be facing jail time when he recovers. Considering what he went through, do you think this is fair? 3. Edwin says that Cole will be okay if he ever finds a reason to live. Do you think Cole has found his reason to live? Explain. 4. Why does Cole throw out the hair he pulled from the Spirit Bear? Would you have done the same? Why / why not? 5. Edwin says Cole will be ok if he ever finds a reason to live. Do you think Cole has found a reason to live? Explain.
