1 Failures & Second Chances John 21:15-25,

2 V1-3, Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Tiberias. It happened this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. 3 "I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll go with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

3 V4-6, Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. 5 He called out to them, "Friends, haven't you any fish?" "No," they answered. 6 He said, "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

4 He was giving the disciples an opportunity to remember His teaching. Jesus taught them earlier that apart from Him they could do nothing.

5 V7-11, Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, "It is the Lord," he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.

6 9 When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. 10 Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish you have just caught." 11 Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn.

7 The catch was big, there were 153 fish and Jesus made it happen.

8 Lk 5:1-6, 10-11, One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, with the people crowding around him and listening to the word of God… 4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch."

9 5 Simon answered, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets." 6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break…

10 Then Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men." 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.

11 Are you trying to do God’s work with your own strength? It won’t work but when you do God’s work with the power of the Holy Spirit it will work.

12 V12-14, Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

13 Jesus knew they were hungry and he provided their basic needs = bread and fish.

14 V15, When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon son of John, do you truly love (agape) me more than these?" "Yes, Lord," he said, "you know that I love (philo) you." Jesus said, "Feed my lambs."

15 What are these things? It could be the fishing boat, nets and 153 large fish. Jesus was asking Peter, are you going to catch fish or men? Are you going to make money or disciples?

16 V16-17, Again Jesus said, "Simon son of John, do you truly love (agape) me?" He answered, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love (philo) you." Jesus said, "Take care of my sheep."

17 V17, The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love (philo) me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love (philo) you." Jesus said, "Feed my sheep.”

18 Not only there are redemptions, there are also restorations in Christ.

19 Lk 5:10, Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men." In Lk 5, Jesus called Peter to catch people for Christ – to do evangelism. In Acts 2:41, Peter caught 3,000 people for Christ.

20 Jn 21:15, 17, Jesus said, "Feed my lamb & sheep.” In Jn 21, Jesus called Peter to teach His people so they grow to maturity. Evangelism and discipleship go hand in hand.

21 V18-19, I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go." 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, "Follow me!"

22 Following Jesus may require you to surrender your successful career. To follow Jesus may mean to suffer for Him.

23 V20-22, Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, "Lord, what about him?" 22 Jesus answered, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me."

24 Every disciple is called to do different ministry in the church. Peter was called to shepherd the sheep of Christ. John was called to write the story of Christ so that the readers may believe in Jesus.

25 20:31, But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

26 21:24-25, This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true. 25 Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.

27 What is your calling?
