Exercise Group New Measures to Understand Societal Change Barbara Iasiello Global Project, OECD

Roundtable The Secretary General of the League of Arab States has set up an Arab Roundtable to select the key indicators to track the Arab Countries’ progress

A National Roundtable bring a range of stakeholders together (including policy makers, statisticians, experts and civil society) to discuss the key aspects of life that matter for a society in order to judge progress.

Factbook To make the life easier you should assume that the only indicators available for your country are the ones which can be found in the OECD Factbook.

Key Indicators A set of key indicators covers economic, social, environmental and other concerns without deriving any particular single measure. Example of the headline indicators chosen to Measure Australian Progress: 1. INDIVIDUALS: Health; Education and Training; Work. 2. THE ECONOMY AND ECONOMIC RESOURCES: National Income; Economic Hardship; National Wealth; Housing; Productivity. 3. THE ENVIRONMENT: the Natural Landscape; the Air and Atmosphere; Oceans and Estuaries. 4. LIVING TOGETHER: Family, Community, and Social Cohesion; Crime; Democracy, Governance, and Citizenship.

Your Job is to select  the 10 most important available indicators of your region’s progress  recommend another 5 indicators which are needed to provide a full assessment of progress but for which data are not available  reflect on the process: Were discussions useful? How was consensus reached? Where there were areas of disagreement?

Remember! You will need to try to reach consensus on your choice of indicators. Your presentation to the Secretary General should discuss the indicators and the process.
