3-2: The Coordinate Plane Graphing on a Coordinate Plane

Ordered Pair A pair of numbers that can be used to locate a point on a coordinate plane. Solutions for two variable expressions can be written as an ordered pairs.

The four regions formed on a Coordinate Plane. A plane that is divided into four regions (Quadrants) by horizontal and vertical number lines. Locations on the plane are represented by Ordered Pairs. Quadrants The four regions formed on a Coordinate Plane. Quadrant I: Upper-right region. (+, +) Quadrant II: Upper-left region. (–, +) Quadrant III: Lower-left region. (–, –) Quadrant IV: Lower-right region. (+, –)

x-axis The Horizontal number-line on a coordinate plane. y-axis The Vertical number-line on a coordinate plane.

Origin Point (0, 0) on the coordinate plane.

Problems/Examples of Plot the following ordered pairs on the coordinate plane. Name the Quadrant. A) (2,5) B) (-2,4) C) (5,-3) D) (-1,-5)

Problems/Examples of Determine if each ordered pair is a solution for 4x – 7: (2, 15): ______ 4x – 7 4(2) – 7 8 – 7 1 1 ≠ 15 Not a solution (4, 9): ______ 4x – 7 4(4) – 7 16 – 7 9 9 = 9 Yes; it is a solution.

Problems/Examples of Make a table of solution for y = 3x – 6 for x = 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10. x 3x – 6 y (x,y) 2 3(2) – 6 0 (2, 0) 4 3(4) – 6 6 (4, 6) 6 3(6) – 6 12 (6, 12) 8 3(8) – 6 18 (8, 18) 10 3(10) – 6 24 (3, 24)

D) Write the coordinates of each ordered pair. Name each quadrant. II;(-2, 5) X: __________ III;(-4, -7) Y: __________ IV;(1, -5) Z: __________ x-axis;(7, 0) E) If you traveled 5 units down from Point W and 3 units to the right… What are the coordinates of your new location? (1, 0)

Use the given values to make a table of solutions. Problems/Examples of Use the given values to make a table of solutions. y = 4x – 3 for x = 0, 1, 2 x 3x – 6 y (x,y) 0 3(0) – 6 -6 (0, -6) 3(1) – 6 -3 (1, -3) 3(2) – 6 0 (2, 0)
