The Skeletal System Chapter 1, section 2

Bones The average adult has 206 bones. Give support Protect Move with muscles Store minerals and make blood help maintain homeostasis

Bone Bone is living material –Made from minerals and connective tissue How do the minerals get there?  Osteoblast specialized cells that deliver minerals to bones

Compact bone No visible openings

Spongy Bone Have a lot of open spaces Provides most of the support and strength for the bone

Marrow Stores fat in adult bone

Bone Growth  Most bone begins as cartilage tissue  Cartilage is replaced by bone over time.  Children have growth plates to allow bone to reach adult size.

Joints Place where 2+ bones meet. Allows for body movement when muscles contract.

Ligaments Strong “elastic” bands of connective tissues. Connect bones in a joint Many bones are “capped” with ligaments = cushions impact

Skeletal System Injury Dislocation
