Overview of Whistles: A whistle is an ancient instrument dating back around 5,000 years ago. It has been used for making music or identifying a tribe. Whistles have been made from several things including: clay, wood and bone. A whistle belongs to the group of woodwind instruments called “fipple flutes.” Some ceramic flutes are also called, “Ocarina,” which means “little goose” in Italian referring to the shape of the whistle.

Why the Importance Appreciate other culture's traditions. Learn the history of the whistle. To create your own whistle. Experience hand building of clay.

Required Tools Clay Loop tool Wood stick Pencil Paper Kiln Paint/ glaze

Steps “How To” 1. Cut ball of clay into two halves. 2. Hollow out each side using loop tool. 3. Attach each side together using slip and score.

4. Create a small block mouthpiece, aligning it with the top and attach. 5. Insert a stick through the mouthpiece into the hollow body. Be sure not to stick it all the way through. 6. Using any sharp tool, cut an angled (45 degrees) opening in the top of the whistle with a straight edge at the front of the opening. The hole must be above the inserted stick. 7. Pull stick out after top hole is complete. 8. Test for noise. Adjust opening if needed.

***Improper Opening Placements*** 9. Decorate using additive process. 10. Fire in kiln and paint or glaze to finish.
