1 What do you Know About Clay Discuss in groups and write for credit. What projects have you made? Did you enjoy clay? What would you like to make/learn?

2 SCULTPURE- 3-D art that has mass. TEXTURE: Element of art. The way that something feels visually, tactilely

3 PINCH POT- 3-D pots that are created by pinching clay into a vessel shape/form. COIL CONSTRUCTION - method for creating clay forms by rolling coils & building coils on top of coils.

4 Working with coil, slab or pinch methods will produce clay pieces that have different appearances. Coils & slabs can be used in many ways to produce creative ceramic pieces. In order for 2 pieces of clay to remain attached after drying, you MUST, score & slip. Clay is transformed through a series of steps that change it & make it permanently hard. Vocabulary definitions.

6 particles of decomposed rock combined with water to create a plastic, malleable body which is then fired in a kiln to fuse the particles back into a stone-like state

7 SLAB CONSTRUCTION- method for creating forms in clay using rolled slabs. WHEEL -Device/tool used for throwing clay forms.

8 SLIP - watered down clay—milkshake like consistancy. SCORE - Carving incisions into the clay. WEDGING - Process used to get air out of clay. “Squish & roll it out” –especially important when using the wheel

9 LEATHER-HARD: Clay that has dried to the consistency of leather-best time to carve or add attachments to the clay. GREENWARE: Air dried clay that is ready to be fired.

10 BISQUE- Clay that has been fired but not glazed. FIRING - Heating clay to very high temps (+ 1,000 degrees)

11 KILN- use to fire clay. GLAZE - Protective coating applied to bisque. 3 functions of Glaze : H20 proof, decorative & protects
