ACCESS for ELLs, a Test of English Proficiency Understanding the Parent/Guardian Report

The ACCESS for ELLs Test This test:  shows how well your child is learning English;  replaced MEPA in 2013;  tests students in kindergarten to grade 12 each January who are English language learners (ELL) in: Reading Writing Speaking Listening Test scores are sent to schools in May. Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education 2

Three Sections of the Parent/Guardian Report  The report has 3 sections: 1.Student information 2.Top part: Scores on each test Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening Bottom part: Combined scores Oral Language, Literacy, Comprehension, and Overall Score 3.A description of each overall proficiency level This shows how well your child has learned English, based on all scores. Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education 3

What Does the Parent/Guardian Report Tell Us? Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education 4  The overall score shows the student’s English language ability in all sections of the test combined  Other scores show the student’s ability in: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing Oral Language: Listening + Speaking Literacy: Reading + Writing Comprehension (Understanding): Listening + Reading

The Score Is Shown as a Level  A student’s overall score is shown as one of six levels: Entering — Level 1 Beginning — Level 2 Developing — Level 3 Expanding — Level 4 Bridging — Level 5 Reaching — Level 6  If a section of the report is blank, then the student was absent or did not take that section.  Student must take all 4 sections to get an Overall Score. Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education 5

Score Is Also Shown as a Number  The report shows the score as a whole number, plus a decimal (for example, 2.5). The whole number (2) indicates that the student is in level 2 (Beginning). The decimal (.5) shows where the student’s English ability is between two whole numbers. A score of 2.5 shows that the student is halfway between Beginning (level 2) and Developing (level 3). Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education 6

What Does Each Level Mean? Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education 7 LevelDescription 1 – EnteringUses very little English and needs visual support (pictures/illustrations) 2 – BeginningUses some general English with visual support 3 – DevelopingUses social and some specific academic English (English used in subjects taught in school) with visual support 4 – ExpandingUses social and some technical academic English 5 – BridgingUses social and academic English with grade level materials 6 – ReachingUses social and academic English at a proficient level
