GLAD  Guided Language Acquisition Design  Most classroom teacher were trained in October and January  Project GLAD™ is a curricular model of professional development dedicated to building academic language and literacy for all students; especially English learners.  The learning strategies are based on brain research  Works great for learning a new language because of pictures, chants, team work, discussion time for students, repetition, and use of color coding.

Examples of GLAD strategies

ELL WELPA testing  WELPA test is done every year for ELLs in Washington state  4 parts: Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing  Speaking is one on one with me, the rest is whole group  K-4 th grade will do Listening, Reading, and Writing February 2 nd -6th  5 th grade will do Listening, Reading, and Writing February 10 th -13 th  Speaking tests will be done throughout February  Results come in late May or early June

Common Core State Standards and Home Language Use  Common Core State Standards establish clear, consistent guidelines for what every student should know and be able to do in math and English language arts from kindergarten through 12 th grade to prepare for college and career.  The Common Core focuses on developing the critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills students will need to be successful in college and career.  The new standards require students to discuss and explain ideas, ask questions, speak in complete sentences, analyze and interpret data, reason and apply ideas using evidence. A lot of home language A lot of learning A little home language Limited learning

Common Core State Standards and Home Language  To be able to do all these things at school in Academic English, we need to be able to practice them at home in our home language  How do we get our children to ask questions?  How do we find ways to ask our children complex questions?  How do we allow our children to develop their ideas about things, explain their thinking, and show evidence? A lot of home language A lot of learning A little home language Limited learning

Common Core State Standards and Home Language  We can talk to our children about school and ask specific questions http://www.simplesimonandco.com/2014/08/25-ways-ask-kids-school-today-without-asking- school-today.html http://www.simplesimonandco.com/2014/08/25-ways-ask-kids-school-today-without-asking- school-today.html  We can read with our children even when they are independent readers and engage them in questioning and discussion about the stories http://nyti.ms/1DzSApAhttp://nyti.ms/1DzSApA  Use discussion bookmarks while reading with them  When our children give us the wrong answer, instead of giving them the right answer immediately, we can ask “Why do you think that?” and have them explain their thinking  When our children are doing homework, we can discuss the concepts in our home language and model how we explain our thinking and use academic vocabulary in our home language A lot of home language A lot of learning A little home language Limited learning
