Ver 1.01 Tips for building and running a successful touch football team By: John Schiebel MTFL League Registrar, Aug-2005

Ver 1.02 Overview Purpose Recruitment Finances On-field Considerations / Etiquette

Ver 1.03 Purpose The goal of any sports team is to win the championship title. This presentation offers tips on how a team can reach that goal. This presentation also provides insights on how to sustain a championship team (from season to season) and have fun doing it.

Ver 1.04 Recruitment What’s key: the QB, the rusher and snapper. What else: gain players who are capable of playing (e.g. available, enthusiastic and willing to listen to the team captain). –Recruit from friends, co-workers or even by watching other teams (in this or other leagues). –Recall despite your best planning, there will always be some interruption in a player’s availability (e.g. wedding, birth, funeral, work or travel commitment).

Ver 1.05 Recruitment Some teams have a small number of players while others use a larger number. –Regardless, only consider players who match and/or complement the temperament of the team and its captain(s). Diversity (in age) and roster depth is a plus. –Having players of different skills/experiences and capable of playing different positions does help when an injury occurs OR when someone can’t make it to a game. –It may also bring more enjoyment to your team as the opportunity to share and/or learn something new exists more readily.

Ver 1.06 Finances Even with a sponsor, expectations for finances must be set well before you play any game. Why? –Your team must pay the league up-front (or it won’t play); –You/the organizer should NOT be solely responsible for another person’s fun/commitments.

Ver 1.07 On-field Considerations / Etiquette Arrive minutes before kick-off to allow for individual warm-ups and/or some team drills. During the game: –When a referee’s flag is dropped … get over it and move on to the next play as fast as possible. –Praise in public … compliment excellent play; –Criticize/follow-up in private. –Bring lots of water!
