DRAFT Adapted Sports March 9, 2015

DRAFT Adapted Sports Atlanta Public Schools has been part of the American Association of Adapted Sports Program (AAASP) for approximately 15 years. Our athletes compete in Wheelchair Handball, Wheelchair Basketball and Wheelchair Football. Athletes in power chairs can only compete in Wheelchair Handball and Wheelchair Football. Those in manual chairs can compete in all sports.

DRAFT Adapted Sports The requirement to be involved is the student must have some physical disability, no matter how minimal or severe. This also includes those that are visually limited and hearing impaired. The athlete does not have to be in a wheelchair in life but quickly learns how to play sports in one. Sport wheelchairs are used for maximum efficiency since the level of competition can be very high.

DRAFT Adapted Sports One of the greatest aspects in this program is males and females play on the same team. And the players can be from elementary school, middle school and/or high school, all on one team. Watching experienced high school athletes work with the new, younger recruits is something to witness.

DRAFT Adapted Sports AAASP is a very competitive league and is aligned with the GHSA (Georgia High School Association) which is the governing body for HS sports in Georgia. This is no recreation program. This is true competition. And the students that play, have well earned the title of “athlete.”

DRAFT Adapted Sports In past years our team, the Atlanta Wolfpack, has been the recipient of several state championships in Handball and Basketball and 2 time runner up in Football. As seniors leave, we continue to seek new players and with perseverance they become our new talent. Having a disability does not define these students. Having the desire, drive and commitment makes them true athletes. No diversity, just champions.

DRAFT Adapted Sports Due to the continuing support from the Department of Special Education, these students have been given the unique opportunity to be a part of something really special; being a teammate. Something they may never have thought could happen.
