Shakespeare uses a play on the word “sole” here, implying that the cobbler is both literally fixes shoe soles and figuratively, mends men’s souls. The author uses humor to engage the audience at the start of the play and perhaps to foreshadow that some of the men in the play may be in need of “soul mending.”
