Two verbs in one sentence

More than one verb There are a few verbs in french that can be followed immediately by another verb in the same sentence. This is done all the time in English I like to dance. You dislike talking on the phone. He likes to watch television.

En français J’aime danser. ( I like to dance.) Notice – aimer is conjugated, danser is left in the infinitive. Tu détestes parler au téléphone. (You dislike talking on the phone.) détester is conjugated and parler is left in the infinitive. Il aime regarder la télévision. (He likes to watch TV.) aimer is conjugated and regarder is left in the infinitive.

Making them negative There are two ways to say you don’t like doing something. Je déteste parler au téléphone. Je n’aime pas parler au téléphone. Try: Vous détestez jouer au football. Elles détestent travailler

Wrap up For now, we will ONLY use this with LIKE/DISLIKE verbs. The first verb (aimer/détester) will be conjugated. The second verb will be in the infinitive.
