Presentation transcript:

Kindergarten Printmaking Birds shape, color, texture, space pattern, emphasis Objective The student will learn the basic concept of printmaking by creating a scene with birds in a tree. Materials 12x18 piece blue paper (sky) option: white paper, sponge stamp blue paint for sky (allows for some white/clouds) potatoes, middle and small size have the potatoes cut to the sizes you need before class knife styrofoam trays (use as paint tray) tempera paints - red, orange, yellow, brown pieces of corrugated cardboard (about 3-4” long) for branches paper towels fine black marker brush Set Ups Class Periods - 1 ★ Make sure the students put their name and date on every project!

Procedure (print this page and the next two pages to teach from) Step 1: (slide 2, 3, 4) Discuss how there are many everyday objects that we use that are printed. Movie posters, baseball cards, invitations, t-shirts, banners, cereal boxes (slide 5) Explain that we will create a scene of red birds (Cardinals) in a tree by using a simple printmaking process. We will make a stamp out of cardboard and potatoes. Demonstrate the steps as you go. Step 2: the branches Put some brown paint on the styrofoam tray - just enough to cover the edge dip the side of the piece of cardboard in the paint to create the branches. Think about COMPOSITION - where will the birds be sitting - don’t cover the paper with branches Step 3: the birds Think about COMPOSITION - 5 birds max. - don’t cover the paper with birds Cut the medium potato in half and cut this half again. Stamp the bodies of the birds using red tempera. Cut the half potato in two pieces. Use the quarter to stamp the tails. Cut the small potato in half and stamp the faces of the birds. Clean this half potato with a tissue and cut it in two. Stamp the wings. Paint beaks, eyes and legs.. DO NOT GLOB IT ON.

vocabulary print - a shape or mark made from a block or a plate or other object that is covered with wet color/ink and then pressed onto a flat surface like paper or fabric shape - implies spatial form stamp - to imprint with a mark color emphasis - the place in an artwork where your eye first lands. texture - visual representation of the surface qualities (implied) space - refers to the area in which art is organized. pattern - repetition of a design element, exact or varied, which establishes a visual beat
