1 5th Grade Texture and color in everyday objects Objective: The students will know what texture is and practice applying texture to a variety of everyday objects. The student will contrast the texture in their drawing with patterns in the background. Materials –White paper 9x12 –pencil –eraser –objects for tracing - glue bottle, scissors, paint brush, compass, roll of tape, etc. –practice paper Class Periods - 2 Set Up –each table group should have a group of objects for tracing –each student gets a pencil, eraser, white paper, practice paper Make sure the students put their name and date on every project!

2 Procedure - Day 1 Discuss the element of texture in arttexture appeals to our sense of touchThe tree line drawing you created in a previous class has texture that was created by the scumbling strokes of the marker. Create a composition With the objects (tape dispenser, glue bottle, scissors, compass, protractor, etc.) plan a Composition create an interesting layoutsimply trace your objects onto the paper. With pencil, create a different texture within the outline of each object,. For example a furry glue bottle or a roll of tape made out of bricks. Spend some time looking around your room and picking out different textures that you can use on your objects. To draw a texture is not difficult; come up with a mark and repeating that mark over and over, until you have filled the surface. Sometimes making texture, such as a brick wall, also requires that we create a pattern.Use a different texture on each object. Remember that this will require your patience and will take a good amount of time. Stay with it. Background patterns Fill in the background using colorful patterns. See the student examples of patterns on slides 6 and 7 Color When choosing the colors for the background, have a reason for the colors - cool colors, warm colors, primary colors, complimentary colors. You may decide to choose a select number of colors. Just don’t use a whole rainbow. There should be a pattern to your colors.You may want to spend time on a scrap piece of paper making a plan of different patterns, using your markers. When you have an idea that you are comfortable with, fill in behind your textured objects.
