Surviving the Titanic Scenario – Your team’s job is to design and construct a cardboard boat which will be propelled by one of your team the length of the Herington municipal Swimming pool. Materials – 40 square feet of one ply uncoated cardboard. ( No waved or coated cardboard) 1 roll of duct tape Timeline : Research, design, and construction will be completed by Aug 31, Boats will be raced on Wednesday, Sept 1, Final reports / results will be due on Friday, September 3, 2010.

Surviving the Titanic Report will have a cover sheet with team member names and team name. Report will include: a problem definition Preliminary data Mass of each team member Volume of water displaced by each person on team calculation State which team member will race and reasoning behind selection Drawing of boat design, dimensions and parts of craft labeled Scale model of your boat (1 per team). Give the name of your boat.

Surviving the Titanic Report continued. Document assembly guide / instructions (how-to) Analysis What worked well with details. What did not work well with details. Three things you saw other teams do that were effective. Explain why did they work. Explain how you calculate the speed of the boat. Show speed calculations Summarize the performance of your boat. Explain how buoyancy and density are related.

Surviving the Titanic Report continued. Evaluate your performance on the project (0-5) Evaluate your teammate’s individual performances (0-5) 0 – Worked against the team 1 – No help 2 – Provided help only when asked 3 – Supportive at times but not always 4 – Strong voluntary support provide during the entire project 5 – Took charge of key areas to project completion What did you enjoy about the project? What would you change for next year? What do you think your final grade should be for this project and why?
