Presentation transcript:

"BEST PRACTICES" REPRESENTATIVE OF THE "NEW" PHYSICAL EDUCATION Lesson content addresses one or more district, state or national standards Lesson content identifies specific learning objectives for varied ability levels of students Assessment of student learning is conducted to determine if students have achieved lesson objectives Fitness is “woven” throughout lessons and units of instruction Technology is utilized to augment students’ learning, monitor student performance, & to assess teaching & program effectiveness. Students are challenged to use higher-order thinking (i.e., answer meaningful questions; problem-solve) Students are challenged to work independently and cooperatively with classmates Students are challenge to be responsible for their own learning

Instant Activities Help students to become physically engaged in moderate to vigorous physical activity with minimal instruction Help students to focus Reinforce personal/social responsibility

Establishing a Management System Routines - customary way of handling a situation - used for frequently occurring events

What are some of the common “routines” you need to be aware of? Locker room – when to enter; how long; permission to enter during class Before class – entrance, where to go first, attendance procedures Lesson-related: what areas of gym are out-of-bounds, stopping & starting cues, getting journals out & putting them away End-of-Lesson Miscellaneous: how to handle late arrivals; injuries, bathroom, fire alarms

RULES General expectations for behavior in a setting Guidelines for Development -developed cooperatively -state positively -made explicit to students (posted) -reinforced consistently & fairly -few in number

Guidelines for Maintaining Cooperation of Students?? What are they…?

Hellison’s Levels of Personal/Social Responsibility A system of teaching strategies designed to move students from lower to higher levels of responsibility Make students aware of appropriate behaviors in relation to behavior goals Provide students with opportunities to set personal goals for behavior change Establish consequences for both positive & negative behavior to encourage positive growth Include students in group processes designed to share “TEACHER POWER”

Toward Self-Direction Involve students in decision making Resolve conflicts through discussion Use role playing to communicate concepts
