Autumn Term 2012 Design and Technology project Shelters

Look at these pictures of different shelters. Things to think about… Why were they built? Who or what uses them? Does it matter how they look? Does it matter how they are made?

My occupants kick up a stink sometimes – but I’m very attached to them!

What was important to the person who designed me – how I look? What I’m made of? The job I do?

What sort of shelter am I? Am I pleasant to look at? Do you think I’m tough?

Am I a shelter? What is my function? Do I look nice?

Who or what do I give shelter to? Why are there no walls?

Some people would say I’m not a shelter at all! What do you think?

What is my function? Why is my door made like this? What makes you think I was built to last?

Am I a shelter? Who uses me? Have you visited me, perhaps (or maybe one of my relatives)?

What would be important, if you were designing me?

Why am I just a bit grander than the last shelter you saw? Do you think I’m a good shelter?

What do we shelter against? Why don’t we have windows? Why are we different colours? Which one of us would you chose?

Why am I built this way? Do I look nice?

Am I a shelter? What is my function? Do I look nice?

I’m called a gazebo. Who might use me, do you think?

What is a shelter? Who (or what) uses them? What do you think makes a good shelter? Does it matter how well a shelter is made? Does it matter what a shelter looks like? How many shelters can you think of in the school grounds?

Could you design a shelter? What would you need to think about ?
