Slides describing your fieldwork / internship Include photographs or videos. Description of your learning curve What did you learn? Was the experience what you expected? Why or why not?

Helping the Homeless Every day, I pass people on the street begging for spare change. Sometimes I give them change and sometimes I don’t. For my fieldwork, I wanted to learn about resources that help homeless people.

I attended an information session at the Church next to where I live about the Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission. The presenter described an institution that really helps people. I decided I wanted to help them.

Expectations Nervous – I was anxious about how the people might respond to me. Maybe they would be angry because I’m only coming to help out for one day and then I’ll leave and go to my nice happy home, while they have to stay. Excited – I felt like I could finally make a difference and do something to help. Afraid – I was afraid that I might be exposed to someone who is sick or dangerous.

Field Work Research I learned some very interesting facts about the Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission online before visiting. It was founded by John Wannamaker, John Stetson, and W. Atlee Burpee in 1878. There simple goal: to provide a breakfast every Sunday for the poor and to bring them under Christian influence.

What I learned … That homeless people are often people who have run into tough situations – a family member became ill and they couldn’t afford the bills, someone lost their job. People at the shelter were very happy to have us there to help out. The shelter offers many different services beyond providing a free lunch or dinner. Clean socks are often the most requested clothing item at the shelter.

How I changed … Fear – I’m no longer afraid to volunteer at a homeless shelter. Hopeful – I’m hopeful that there are people who dedicate their lives to helping the homeless. Empowered – I now know that I can make a difference by volunteering to help at the shelter.

Homework: Continue to construct your Senior Project Presentation
