Who were the Ancient Egyptians? The earliest Egyptians lived about 5,000 years ago. They lived by the Nile. They regarded life and children as great blessings.

Geography Every year the Nile flooded, leaving rich soil. They lived in the desert and it was very dry so life depended on the Nile.

Hieroglyphs Hieroglyph means “sacred carving” in Greek. Hieroglyphs are usually written on long scrolls of papyrus, a type of paper. The Rosetta Stone was used to decode the hieroglyphs and was discovered by a French soldier in The Egyptian alphabet contained more than 700 hieroglyphs.

Egyptian Pharaohs King Tut was one of the most famous pharaohs. King Tut had mini coffins to hold his internal organs. Cleopatra, who ruled Egypt for 22 years, was actually Greek! Pharaohs wore fake beards made of goat hair. One Egyptian leader kept hippos as pets.

Religion Egyptians worshipped more than 2,000 gods and goddesses. Tombs were stocked with everything from food to khol. An unwrapped mummy’s bandages could stretch for half a mile. The Great Pyramid weighs as much as 16 Empire State Buildings.

Egyptian Gods and Godesses Osiris = Chief God of the underworld. Seth = God of violence, chaos, storms, darkness, and desert land. Hathor = Goddess of the sky. Thoth = God of the moon. Hourus = Son of Osiris and Isis. Isis = Godess of religious beliefs. Re = Sun God

Battles and Wars Battle of Megiddo, was fought in 1479 BC between Egypt and Canaanites in the Jezreel Valley. In 332 BC Egypt’s days of greatness were over, Ancient Greece fought and conquered Ancient Egypt.

Unanswered Questions How did King Tut die at such an early age? What is and what or who caused the hole on the back of King Tut’s neck? What did the creators call what we now call the Sphinx? Who built the Sphinx, when was it built, and is it a statue of someone?
