Annual Priorities -Lighter Footprint Strategy- June 11, 2014

Outline Background The main categories to be focused on within the Lighter Footprint Strategy this year Current and planned projects Summary

Background The AMS Lighter Footprint Strategy is the guiding document for environment and sustainable development within the organization.

Food & Beverage Building Operations Administrative Operations Transportation Communication Campus Relations Background

Food & Beverage Building Operations Administrative Operations Transportation Communication Campus Relations Relevant Categories for 14/15

Current Projects New SUB Sustainability Features and Projects Rooftop Garden Waste Auditing Program Pocket Lounge (1) AMS Composting Program AMS Sustainability Centre Timber Runoff Sustainable Wall Art projects Sustainability Dashboard

Planning for 14/15 Communications, Campus Relations AMS Sustainability Centre programming AMS Composting Program expansion Food & Beverage, Building Operations Building Energy Monitoring Sustainable Packaging for Food Outlets

Timber and Runoff Timber is a mechanical tree that responds to interactions with surrounding environment Runoff is a water feature

Sustainable Wall Art Projects Petri dish wall art Planned art project to be displayed on top of the Nest, TBA

Sustainability Dashboard To be placed within the AMS Sustainability Centre Will feature building waste consumption and energy use once data is sufficient for display Also to be used for communication regarding sustainability events

Rooftop Garden Will be operated by Orchard Garden MOU currently in draft format

Waste Auditing Program Electronic waste scale is currently being wired inside the loading bay, to be in functioning order shortly

Pocket Lounge - Sustainability To reflect sustainability history in British Columbia, especially on UBC campus

AMS Composting Program In-vessel composting machine to be inside the loading bay by the end of this summer Vermicomposting (worm composting) should be continued in collaboration with the Rooftop Garden

AMS Sustainability Centre Will feature display pieces such as the Sustainability Dashboard, as well as material for themes and programs as they are developed To serve as both an educational resource centre as well as a centre for student engagement in sustainability The goal is to set a solid programming and administrative plan by the opening in January

Building Energy Monitoring The plan is to create a simple-to-use energy monitoring system to be displayed on the Sustainability Dashboard This will provide students with knowledge on their usage, as well as provide auditable data

Sustainable Packaging As we move into the AMS Student Nest, there will be increased opportunities to reduce the waste we produce, and to close the loop on as much waste as possible by involving the composting program The goal is to have completely recyclable or compostable packaging material for all food outlets

Summary All categories will be worked on either directly or indirectly Many projects will be in place for rollout with the opening of the AMS Student Nest A heavy focus is placed upon building interactions and student engagement for this year New projects and programs may be developed as the year progresses!
