Life Cycle of a Cell Phone Kristy Guarienti Folsom High School Chemistry & AP Environmental Science Teacher kguarien@fcusd.org

 A series of collaborative lessons between STEM & German teacher.  Goal: to raise awareness about our culture of consumerism and potential effects on the environment.  Goethe Institut Chicago  Conference in Germany around the theme of Sustainability.  Currently selecting 2 nd year team of 3 year project.  Coming soon…website called “Teaching sustainability” where the seminars, conference, results and the material will be. Background

 FCUSD has adopted the 3-course model for high school  Physics  Biology  Chemistry  Necessitates including Earth Science standards outlined in NGSS throughout each of these classes.  Standards addressed in these lessons include:  HS-ESS3 Earth & Human Activity (includes Natural Resources and cost-benefit ration of mineral resources)  HS-PS1-7 Conservation of Matter NGSS, CA Framework Draft & 3- course Model for Chemistry

YOU are a Superhero!

 Read the article with your group.  Complete the 3-2-1 Summary in your lab journal  3 things that I learned:  2 questions I have:  1 new idea or connection I am making.  After all group members are done, take turns sharing your lists. The Periodic Table’s Endangered Elements

What does the article mean?

 What are the elements of a superhero?  Who gets to be a super hero?  Video Clip:  https://www.youtube.com/user/HeroesRebornNBC?v=4FLH B2zB_cA https://www.youtube.com/user/HeroesRebornNBC?v=4FLH B2zB_cA Super Hero & Super Powers

 What does sustainability mean to you?  Think back to the article, are the elements being used in a sustainable way? Sustainability

 How many cell phones have you had in your life?  When did you first get a cell phone? Cell Phone Survey & Usage Chart

Are we using our cell phones sustainably?

1.How much time are you on the computer? Using internet/data? What do you eat on a daily basis? 2.What mode(s) of transportation do you use? 3.How frequently do you shop for clothes? Other areas to explore:

 What are they made of?  Be specific about the types of materials, the chemical composition, and where they come from in the world?  How does it work?  What if you had to go without it for a day?  How often do you replace it?  Are the materials from fair trade?  What happens to it when you get a new one?  What does this have to do with Chemistry or AP Environmental Science? Cell Phone Research Project

 Choose one of the resources generated by the class list  Research it further  What are the elements of a cell phone? What are the elements of a cell phone?  http://www.compoundchem.com/2014/02/19/the- chemical-elements-of-a-smartp hone/ http://www.compoundchem.com/2014/02/19/the- chemical-elements-of-a-smartp hone/  Generate 1 3x5 notecard (paper, publisher, word, etc.) per resource  Needs to address where the materials come from or usage around the world  APES & AP GERMAN COLLABORATION  CHEMISTRY PUTTING IT ON THE MAP Research Project

Putting the Elements on the Map

 EPA link  https://lifecycleofmyiphone.wordpress.com/my- iphone/the-life-cycle-of-an-iphone/  Collate relevant, current data  The ecological footprint of a cell phone web search  Multiple data sources Life Cycle of a Cell Phone

 Solutions?  Cell phone drive for recycling? Ecological Footprint

 Materials  Global impact  Ecological footprint  Solutions  Reflection  How does all of this fit in with sustainability?  Use simple rubrics to self-assess or peer assess. Final Assessment/Reflection:

 School wide recycling program  What about in the lunch room? At football games? In the gym? Near the vending machines?  Analysis of energy efficiency  Mitigation of environmental damage  Alternate forms of energy  Passive vs. active solar homes  QR codes with guided trail around pond  School garden project with composting?  Consumption, Resource Management & Globalization  Clothing: Jeans  Virtual water  Biodiversity  Super Hero Campaign “Heroes of the Planet” What else can we do to be more sustainable? End of study projects…
