WG on possible controls restructuring 16 AB Equipment Groups ATB Areas, Targets and Beams BI Beam Instrumentation BT Beam Transfer PO Power Converters RF Radio Frequency

WG on possible controls restructuring 17 PO-CC Section Converter Control section:  Supports the installed controls hardware and software for operational power converters in the: –PS complex, transfer lines, SPS, SPS north experimental area, CNGS, LHC, LHC Magnet Test Benches, LHC experimental magnets, CAST, Power converter and DCCT test areas  Supports function generation for RF in the SPS and LHC  Develops new controls hardware and software for new and renovated converters at CERN

WG on possible controls restructuring 18 PO-CC  SPS Power Converter Controls –MUGEF systems ~20 VME crates controlling about 600 converters Crates contain a mix of standard CO supported cards (uP, Timing) and PO designed cards (function generation, acquisition, status control) Porting to FESA underway  SPS North Experimental Area –380 converters are controlled by very old wire wrap electronics linked by a parallel data bus to a VME “junction crate” running under FESA –A renovation plan for the electronics has been presented but not approved  PS –Most converter controls are based on G64 bus systems linked by MIL1553 to VME gateway systems (~700 converters) –All cards were developed at CERN –function generation & analogue acquisition are provided by AB-CO –MIL1553 Gateway systems are being ported to FESA  PS Main Power Converter –The PS Main Power Converter is controlled by very old electronics that includes a VME crate and a G64 crate –State control uses a Siemens PLC –A new control system is being developed based on LHC controls electronics (FGC) linked by WorldFIP to a PC based FGC gateway (the PLC will remain) –This new control system will also be used with the new PS main power converter that will be operational in 2010

WG on possible controls restructuring 19 PO-CC  LEIR –Many commercial power converters are used in LEIR. These include their own controls electronics and are operated via serial links from a VME crate running FESA –The same architecture and serial protocols will be used in CTF3 but with converters designed by CERN  LHC –All 1712 LHC circuits are driven by power converters controlled by dedicated control computers designed at CERN called Function Generator/Controllers (FGCs) –FGCs are linked via WorldFIP to PC based FGC gateways running FGC-specific SW (not based on FESA) –The gateways are integrated with all the AB-CO services (Timing, Post Mortem, Alarms, Logging, Role Based Access Control, Controls Middleware, JAPC)  PS Booster –100 Multipole circuit converters are being renovated with new power and controls electronics developed at CERN. –The controls will be an evolution of the LHC controls (FGC3). –Like the LHC, these will use the WorldFIP fieldbus  PLCs –Many small converters in Rex/Isolde, AD, and CTF3 are controlled by PLCs –These are linked by gateway systems that are being ported to FESA –PLCs are also used to manage the interlocks of the PS and SPS main power converters
