Purple Basil By Rees Wilson, Robert Phillips, Zana Zeober, and Claire Robertson Mr. Martell Period 3 Science

Does Purple Basil Grow Better in Dark or Light Conditions? In this presentation we will discuss Purple Basil and how it survives. We will also discuss the growth of Purple Basil in light and dark conditions.

Labeled Parts Purple Basil’s scientific name is Ocimum basilicum L. Purpureum. Leaves Stem Flower Root

Purple Basil Purple Basil’s organic compounds is probably used for insecticide The organic compound helps the plant survive by keeping away bugs Purple Basil is used in cooking Italians put Basil in their hair to symbolize love.

Background Info What effects Purple Basil’s growth Soil Amount of water Amount of sunlight

Photosynthesis Photosynthesis- when plants use the energy from sunlight, Co2, and H2O to create sugar. chemical reaction- turning sunlight, Carbon Dioxide, and Water to create Sugar and Oxygen. The Chloroplast is the organelle that conducts Photosynthesis Xylem moves Water, Oxygen, and other nutrients from the roots to the leaves. Once the nutrients reach the leaves, Photosynthesis can now happen.

Procedures We first labeled our cup with group name and class. We first placed the cotton at the bottom of the cup followed by soil and 3 seeds. We continued to water the plant and make observations.

Graph

Other Observations The plant grew toward the light. This process is known as positive phototropism. The roots grew into the soil in a process called positive geotropism. We observed that the dark plant grew faster than the light plant but then it died after the plant could not make enough sugar for photosynthesis. phototropism

Summary The results that we found out were the dark plant died. The light plant stayed alive. Since the dark died and the light stayed alive, our hypothesis supported the data. Our hypothesis was wrong because the dark plant was taller than the light until it died. The questions we had were, would the plant die if we added hand sanitizer to it? And, If we took the dead plant and put it in the sunlight, could we save it?
