Using PowerPoint The Dos and the Don’ts

PowerPointlessness Is the ineffective use of multimedia presentational software. Is using the “bells and whistles” of the software for no real learning purpose.

Remember… “PowerPoint doesn’t bore people – people bore people.”  PowerPoint is a visual aid.  All the speaking skills still apply – even when using PowerPoint. Eye contact Expression and volume Gestures

Remember… PowerPoint should be used…  to highlight key points of presentations;  to clarify concepts; and  to serve as a means of organizing a speaker’s talk in the audience’s mind.

Safety Tips Have something to say. Organize your thoughts. Don’t let the slides be the show. Use a good projector. Use good slide formatting.

Good Formatting Includes… Less is more. Bigger is better. Be a plain-Jane. High contrast colors. Simple backgrounds.

Safety Tips Take it easy with special effects. Use graphics wisely. Proofread. Practice. Have a back-up plan.
