The Cell Investigation 4

Targets Investigation 4 I can explain and identify that all living organisms are composed of cells which carry on the many functions needed to sustain life. I can explain the differences and similarities between plant and animals cells as well as the organelle functions.

Characteristics of Life Needs to Exchange gases Needs to Remove waste Needs water Needs food (energy) Responds to the environment Grows Reproduces Moves Made of a cell or cells with DNA

Reading Investigation 4 Cell: The Basic Unit of Life (pages 27-30) Cell Wall Cytoplasm Chloroplast

Unicellular & Multicellular Organisms

Unicellular Organism Lives on it’s own Able to perform all the functions of life

Multicellular Organism Exists as a group of cells Performs all the activities of life when all the cells work together

Unicellular or Multicellular Label the pictures as unicellular or multicellular. Unicellular Multicellular Multicellular

Label the pictures as unicellular or multicellular.

Levels of Organization Cell – Basic unit of life Tissues – a group of cells that work together to perform a specific job Organs – a group of tissues that work together to perform a specific job Organ system – a group of organs that work together to perform a specific job Organism – a group of organ systems that work together to perform a specific job.

Cell Games http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/health/anatomy/cell/index.htm

Animal Cell Plasma Membrane What is the outer lining of a cell? Plasma membrane (cell membrane) What is the job of the plasma membrane? controls what goes in and out of the cell

Animal Cell Ribosomes Where are ribosomes found? on the endoplasmic reticulum and floating in the cytoplasm What is created by the ribosomes when they follow instructions from the nucleus? proteins

Animal Cell Mitochondria What is produced in the mitochondrion that fuels the cells activity? energy rich molecule – ATP What is the energy rich molecules used for in the cell? fuels most of the action in the cell

Animal Cell Nucleus What is the job of the nucleus? directs the activity in the cell What does the nucleus hold? construction plans (DNA) Where are genes found in a cell? in the nucleus

Animal Cell Cytoplasm What fills the cell? a fluid called cytoplasm What is suspended in the cytoplasm? all of the organelles

Animal Cell Cell Membrane Nucleus Cytoplasm Mitochondria Ribosomes

Plant Cell Cell Wall What are the two jobs of the rigid cell wall? protects from injury Maintains the shape of the plant cell How does the cell wall maintain the shape of the cell? fluid collects in the vacuole and presses against the cell wall

Plant Cell Plasma membrane Where is the plasma membrane found in a plant cell? it is the lining beneath the cell wall What is the job of the plasma membrane? controls what molecules pass in and out of the cell

Plant Cell Chloroplast What is the main source of energy for a plant cell? sunlight Describe the process of photosynthesis chloroplasts change the sun’s rays into energy that the cell can use

Plant Cell Large Central Vacuole What is stored in a vacuole? water and nutrients Waste materials so the cell does not become contaminated What happens to the plant cell when the vacuole is low on water? the plant droops (wilts) How does the cell regain its shape? when the vacuole is full of water

Plant Cell Ribosomes Where are ribosomes found? on the endoplasmic reticulum and floating in the cytoplasm What is created by the ribosomes when they follow instructions from the nucleus? proteins

Plant Cell Mitochondria What is produced in the mitochondrion that fuels the cells activity? energy rich molecule – ATP What are the energy rich molecules used for in the cell? fuels most of the action in the cell

Plant Cell Nucleus What is the job of the nucleus? directs the activity in the cell What does the nucleus hold? construction plans (DNA) Where are genes found in a cell? in the nucleus

Plant Cell Cytoplasm What fills the cell? a fluid called cytoplasm What is suspended in the cytoplasm? all of the organelles

Plant Cell Cell Membrane Cell Wall Large Vacuole Nucleus Mitochondria Cytoplasm Chloroplast Ribosomes

Bacterial Cell Flagella What is the job of the flagella? they help bacterial cells move around How many flagella does a bacteria cell have? some have one, others have many

Bacterial Cell Cell Wall What is the job of the cell wall of a bacteria cell? maintains the shape of the cell Does the cell wall prevent things from entering or leaving the cell? No, that is the job of the capsule, and cell membrane

Bacterial Cell Ribosomes Where are ribosomes found? on the endoplasmic reticulum and floating in the cytoplasm What is created by the ribosomes when they follow instructions from the nucleus? proteins

Bacterial Cell Nucleoid What collects in the central region of the cell? DNA Describe the region where DNA collects. DNA gathers and clumps together toward the center of the cell

Bacterial Cell Plasma Membrane Is the plasma membrane the only outer layer of a bacterial cell? No, there are other layers What is the job of the plasma membrane? it controls what nutrients, ions, and waste enter and leave the cell

Bacterial Cell Cytoplasm What fills the cell? a fluid called cytoplasm What is suspended in the cytoplasm? all of the organelles

Bacterial Cell Cytoplasm Cell Membrane Nucleoid Cell Wall Ribosomes Flagella

Plant & Animal Cell Poster Place the title at the top of the page. Place the subtitles below the title. Cut out the organelles and labels. Layout the organelles and get approval to glue down. Labels must be horizontal. Draw an arrow to the organelle.
